GENERAL OVERVIEW

The Journal Committee

Established in the year 2008 by Shahnaz, the Journal Committee (often called the JC) entered into its sixth glorious year in 2014. The Committee is known by its reputation of being an agency of excellence in the University. While committees there may be many, the Journal Committee is one the few that has steadily maintained and enhanced its glorious legacy of being honest and ambitious, sincere and efficacious.

The Committee is mainly responsible for publishing the peer-review journal of the RML National Law University known as “The RMLNLU Law Review”, but it has other branches of varied responsibilities too. The journal itself is published annually. Call for Papers are forwarded to as many as sixty Law Universities throughout India, inviting authors to send in their articles. When the articles arrive, they do so in volumes. The Editorial Board of the Committee helped by the Editorial assistants, sort through the heavy load of articles and subject them to rigorous assessment for relevancy and quality and consequently, the best are selected. That is not where the reviewing ends, though. The articles are put through further tests of relevancy, plagiarism, technical accuracy and the like by the team wherein individual members are allocated work for different facets of editing and formatting. It is after weeks of tireless efforts pitched in by twenty odd members of the Committee, the final draft of the Journal is now ready to be published and it goes through a further two to three rounds of proofreading before being published.

More recently, the JC has to its credit, two editions of its International Legal Essay Competition known by its acronym ‘RILEC’ or the RMLNLU International Legal Essay Competition. It began in 2013 with the theme of Space Law, and had continued into its second edition in 2014 with the theme of International Criminal Law.

As for future projects, the publication of a new Topic Specific Journal to replace one issue of the university’s eponymous Law Review is underway. The journal CMET or the Communication, Media, Entertainment and Technology  Journalis a Media Law Journal created to meet the need for legal literature in the area.

THE JOURNAL COMMITTEE: THE YEAR GONE BY

The Committee welcomed the students to a new semester with another edition of EOS 2013- RMLNLU’s intra university literary week offering students a chance to showcase their talents in the field of speaking, writing and ingenuity.

The event was met with great enthusiasm from the students, the central theme being a tribute to the literary masterpiece “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson. The week was dotted by events like JAM, Turncoat, QUIZ, the Roommate Agreement, Spell Bee, Imperatoria and Treasure Hunt to name a few.

This was followed by the announcement of the Second Edition of the RMLNLU International Legal Essay Competition, 2014. The theme this year is “International Criminal Law” and is open to undergraduate students from around the world.

The Journal Committee also organized various Legal Writing Workshops in association with Westlaw where the students were explained the basic steps on how they should proceed with writing a legal paper. The students were given valuable tips on what editors of law reviews look at while selecting an Article for publication.

The Journal Committee published another latest edition of its contemporary law journal, RMLNLU Law Review Volume 3 Special Edition whilst Volume 4 Issue 1 of the same is currently underway.
